2018 In Review

Carla with many graduates from the sewing school! We held an event for them to share their testimonies.
2018 was a great year for empowering Mozambicans to be the change they want to see in their nation! We're already a little way into 2019, but read below for some highlights from last year:
The sewing school had a huge, happy graduation in November, where the ladies told testimonies, sang, danced, and walked home with their own sewing machines! We also held a 2-month intensive course to start schools outside of Beira.
The library grew exponentially in the number of visitors coming to spend several hours per day reading with us! It's exciting to see the culture of our community shifting to value the way their worlds can open up with books.
We held multiple training sessions for the community throughout the year, where we encouraged our workers to pass on the things they have learned to others!
We forged a wonderful partnership with K8AfriKa, a South African brand that chose our sewing school to do all their manufacturing and really brought us to the next level in complexity of products and quality. Check out her website!
We grew our tech team and started developing a new app to help educate people on health issues. The Bible app "Fountain of Life" is also getting a major update and has continued to reach tens of thousands of people!

Praise Reports:

  • For all that went well in 2018!
  • That we were able to grow our team with really quality people.
  • That we received a godsend donation at the end of the year that helped us close out well.

Prayer Requests:

  • Wisdom as we move forward with establishing more organized sales possibilities for the sewing school's products in the States.
  • That we would be able to make the ministry more sustainable this year through sewing sales and services like the website and app jobs.
Thanks for reading, please remember us in your prayers!

Developing a Nation

Economy, Health, and Education

The Human Development Index measures income, life expectancy, and literacy rates to determine how "developed" a country is. Mozambique sits near the bottom of this list.

However, with this exciting new project we will soon have efforts in advancing all three!

Economy = Sewing school
Literacy = Library
Health = Read on!

Equip Mozambique's New Health Initiative

Imagine having so little medical knowledge that every time someone in your family has a stomach ache, fever, or a sniffle, you go to the hospital because you have no idea what to do. Imagine a hospital where the waiting room has up to 100 people who got there before you, and now you have to wait for hours to be seen. Once you finally see the doctor, they only have a matter of seconds to spend with you, write a quick prescription, and send you away. Because he was rushed, he may have even misdiagnosed you and given you a medication that isn’t effective.

This is the reality of the medical system here in Mozambique.
It isn’t a wonder life expectancy is only 54

New App!

Now imagine having access to enough medical information to figure out a simple self-diagnosis for your minor ailments, then finding effective home remedies or being able to go straight to the pharmacy for over-the-counter medications.
Lack of education and basic knowledge about health issues is endemic, and we hope to be agents of change in putting more helpful information in people’s hands. The "Consultare" app is being customized for Mozambican diseases and maladies, and is designed with lots of illustrations to help the low-literacy population.

A team of missionary and Mozambican doctors are helping us with the content, and they are also excited about the possibilities this app opens up.

Since the Fountain of Life app was so successful in getting the Bible to over 50,000 people, now we are looking to reach even more with this potentially life-saving information.
To complete this app, we are going to need more funding for all the hours of work that will go into researching, programming, and illustrating each page.

Partnership with "K8AfriKa"

Amazing how God brings just the right people together, am I right?

Kate is a young South African woman who recently moved to Beira and created a company to export items made out of colorful African fabrics. All she needed was someone to sew the products that she designed.

Here we had a sewing school training up talented seamstresses and creating thousands of products, and all we needed was some way to sell them.

Sounds like a match made in heaven, doesn’t it? We thought so too!

We have greatly enjoyed working with Kate on her new line of products, and she has loved the fact that her business is empowering women and changing lives. Check out her website!

Praise Reports:

  • For the inspiration to start the health app and the great team that is working on it!
  • For new partnerships that are mutually beneficial.
  • That the library is absolutely PACKED on most days! We're excited about how popular it has become in the community!

Prayer Requests:

  • Please continue to pray for our health. Carla is just now getting over a month-long bout with pneumonia, she's still not 100% better but is on the mend.
  • For more great partnerships, especially for the sewing school.
  • For sufficient funding for all of our projects and continuing expenses.
P.S. We just sent out a print newsletter! If you didn't get one, please reply to this email and send us your mailing address and we'll be happy to get one to you.
