How Equip Mozambique is responding to the COVID-19 crisis
While the whole world is in turmoil with the global pandemic, here in Mozambique we’re doing our part to be a part of the solution! On Monday our president declared a state of emergency but not yet a full lockdown, so many of our activities are able to continue. In fact, some of these problems have turned into even greater opportunities for us to be a light!
Alex is excited to be able to help his community and country!
Face Masks with the Sewing School
We have received orders for thousands of face masks for medical workers, so we mobilized our substantial team of graduates to make them from home! This way we can avoid large gatherings AND provide an important public health service. We even received one order that came along with a donation of 12 sewing machines, so that was a huge blessing to the school!
The graduates came in small groups to be trained how to make the masks then took materials and patterns home with them.
Launching the Health App
We started creating an app a while ago to help educate people about health issues, but we were unable to finish it because of lack of funding and other more urgent projects pushed it down the list. Now it’s back to top and center as a priority, and we want to finish and launch it within the next couple weeks. Thankfully, our programming team can also work from home! This will provide crucial information on how to avoid catching the coronavirus and what to do if they suspect they have it. The app also contains advice on nutrition, first aid, and over 100 other diseases, so we hope that it will help many people take better care of themselves!

Bible / Discipleship App
All religious gatherings are cancelled, but most people can still access God’s Word on their phones! We want to run a campaign to get more people to download and use our Fountain of Life app during their time at home, so they can continue being fed spiritually even while unable to gather with other believers.
Library Checkouts
We no longer let people sit in the library and read, but we have kept the door open and increased the amount of check-outs considerably! Again, quarantine is a perfect time to read and grow, and we’re thrilled to help so many in the community pass their time in a meaningful and positive way.

Praise Reports:

  • That so many of our ministries are so well suited to help in this time of crisis.
  • That our team has been able to stay relatively healthy (Jon was sick for a few days, so we quarantined the family for a couple weeks, but we're all better now).

Prayer Requests:

  • That the coronavirus will not spread widely in Africa where the medical facilities would not be able to be much help.
  • That we will be able to get the funding to finish and promote the health app.
Thanks for reading, please remember us in your prayers!

P.S.
MANY THANKS
to everyone who donated to the fundraiser in March for Estrela's new sewing school! The campaign finished out completely funded and we're working on starting construction as soon as possible!

Starting 2020 Strong

2019 - A Year of Challenges and Growth
This past year was one of adventures, challenges, and storms (literal and figurative), and we are definitely glad for the prayers and support of people like YOU who helped us enter 2020 full of hope and determination. We were overwhelmed at the outpouring of generosity from so many people last year, THANK YOU for being part of it all!

The cyclone/hurricane Idai in March 2019 was both an obstacle and an opportunity, and we are grateful for the safety of our team and the new partnerships that it forged. While that fateful March has long past from the rest of the world's memories, the marks of that storm still stare us in the face every day. The hospital finally got its new roof in January--after 9 months of exposure to sun and rain. Many other buildings STILL don't have roofs, many roads are STILL washed out, and many trees--if they survived at all--are still leaning heavily. It has been a year already, but it will take a while longer to fully recover.
A large church building that lost all the roofing tiles and had an entire side wall collapse--and has not yet been rebuilt
An apartment building that lost its roof and still only has a tarp to cover its residents
Sewing School Going Strong
We started the year with a huge order of our most challenging project to date-- 160 uniforms for Beira United, the new elementary school we helped start last year! It was a great opportunity to stretch our abilities and grow together, we had some graduates from each of our past terms join us and it was so much fun to be together again with them like family!
After we finished that job we welcomed in our 34 new students for our 7th term! Nora visited all of the applicants to assess their level of need, and her heart was absolutely broken by the stories she heard and the situations she saw. Elizabete was recently widowed and left with 7 kids whom she couldn't afford to send to school. Albertina is a 19-year-old orphan struggling to take care of 2 younger siblings. They are now part of our Restoring Hope family, and we look forward to watching their lives transform over the next few months, as so many others have before them!
Our teaching staff (front, kneeling) and all the new students are excited for what is in store for this year!
A Worthy Cause
If you ever wanted to be someone's hero, now is your chance!

Estrela has been a teaching assistant in our sewing school for 3 years, but due to her age and health she would like to work closer to home. She has long held the dream of starting her own sewing school close to her house, and we would like to see that dream become reality!

2020 Goals
We have high hopes for the rest of this year, including:
  • Fund and launch the health education app called "Consultare"
  • Fund and launch the law and rights app called "Juris"
  • Start embroidery business with our new donated machine, which will help us reach the next goal...
  • Make the sewing school financially sustainable
  • Organize the library better and acquire new Portuguese books
Reply to the email and let us know if there is anything we do that YOU would like to be part of!

Praise Reports:

  • For starting the year strong, and for our growing team of Mozambicans who are catching the vision and being agents of change in their nation
  • For all the new ladies in the sewing school whose lives are being changed
  • For the safe arrival of the donated embroidery machine

Prayer Requests:

  • For more monthly financial partners
  • For health in our team, the coronavirus has not yet reached our part of the world, but we have plenty of other ailments like malaria that are always a problem
  • For the renewal of the Reinagels' residency cards to go through, we've been on this process for a couple months already but keep running into problems
